The Top Things That Can Affect Ovulation
Ovulation is necessary for conception and there are ways to restore healthy ovulation if it’s not happening or not happening regularly for you. We can work to:
- Restore healthy, regular ovulation
- Balance estrogen and progesterone levels
- Restore healthy cycles – with painful periods, PCOS or after birth control
- Conceiving naturally
Anything that is a stressor can delay or prevent ovulation from happening-in a given cycle or chronically. If there is something stressful, your body is thinking I’m not going to bring a new life into the world (ovulate and get pregnant). Your body will prioritize dealing with stress – physical, mental, emotional, first. Oxidative stress is the biggest stressor to our bodies. Calming this is the first step to combating ovulation and fertility issues and concerns.
These can affect your cycle temporarily:
- Travel
- Temporary changes in routing
- Getting sick
- Short-term stress
These can affect your cycle chronically:
- Oxidative stress
- Hormone imbalances like: high testosterone, high prolactin, low thyroid
- Under-eating
- Over-exercising
- Chronic stress
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Gut issues
- Inflammation
- Major life change
Most of the above issues are issues of oxidative stress.
Our cycles can get thrown off for a month or two. If it becomes a pattern for 3+ cycles, it’s time to get deeper into your root causes that are contributing to cycle issues.
No ovulation can also be caused by stopping birth control. Sometimes this shows up as missing a period or you are bleeding but not ovulating.
Estrogen and progesterone need to be at optimal and balanced levels for healthy ovulation and symptom-free cycles.
Estrogen rises after your period ends and peaks around mid-cycle which triggers ovulation. Then after ovulation you produce progesterone. With high estrogen levels you can see a combination of:
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Constipation
- Elevated geta-glucuronidase-a marker tied to gut bacteria imbalances
- Insulin resistance
- Poor estrogen detox
- Poor methylation
- Stress
- Structural reasons-endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts
By balancing estrogen and progesterone levels you can restore ovulation by:
- Discovering your hormonal levels – your symptoms will give you clues – testing gives you answers
- Uncovering your root causes – this provides the quickest path to bringing balance to your hormones and symptoms
- Setting a solid nutrition and lifestyle foundation
- Using supplements where needed
- Giving yourself grace and time!
