Charting your basal body temperature (BBT) can be a great tool for understanding your fertility and identifying the most fertile days in your cycle. Below is a guide on how to get started with BBT charting.
- Choose a reliable thermometer: Invest in a basal body temperature thermometer, which is more sensitive and accurate than a regular thermometer.
- Take your temperature consistently: Take your BBT each morning, immediately after waking up and before getting out of bed. It is necessary to take your temperature at the same time each day to ensure accurate readings.
- Record your temperature: Use a BBT chart, mobile app or digital platform to log your temperature daily. Make notes of any factors that could impact your temperature – illness, alcohol or disrupted sleep.
- Look for patterns: Over time you will notice patterns in your BBT. Your temperature should be lower during the first half of your cycle and will rise after ovulation due to increased progesterone production. Your BBT will typically remain elevated until it’s time for your next menstrual period if there is no conception.
- Identify your fertile window: By tracking your BBT for several cycles, you can identify the most fertile days of your cycle which can help you time intercourse for the best chance of conception.
BBT charting provides valuable insights into your cycle. It’s just one piece of the fertility puzzle. Combining BBT charting with other fertility tracking methods – monitoring cervical mucus, eating a fertility specific diet and taking the right herbs and supplements can provide a more comprehensive plan for your fertility.
