Helpful Postpartum Tips

Postpartum Recovery Can Be Challenging

This is such an exciting time in your life and it can also be overwhelming. Postpartum recovery can be challenging and it is important to know what to expect. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Your body needs time to heal. It took 9 months to grow your baby and it will take time for your body to return to its pre-pregnancy state. Be patient with yourself and don’t expect to do too much too soon.
  • You may experience a range of emotions. It’s normal to feel happy, sad, tired and overwhelmed at the same time. This is known as the “baby blues”. If your feelings are severe or don’t improve after a few weeks, please talk with your doctor.
  • You are not alone. Many new moms struggle with postpartum challenges. There are many resources available to help you – support groups online forums and postpartum doulas.

Here are some tips for coping with your postpartum journey:

  • Eat healthy meals and snacks. Your body needs fuel to heal. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
  • Drink plenty of fluids. Staying hydrated is important for overall health and well-being.
  • Be mobile regularly. Start slowly with gentle stretches and then once cleared by your doctor start on strengthening exercises and pelvic floor exercises.
  • Reach out for help when you need it. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from your partner, family, friends or other new moms. At times it takes a village.
  • Worry less. Try not to worry about the dishes in the sink, the laundry on the floor or the messy floors. Things will get back to your normal soon enough – I promise!

The postpartum journey can be a challenging time but it’s also a special time to bond with your new baby. Be patient with yourself and enjoy this special time! Remember, you are doing a great job!
